TSA Application Status: USAJOBS and Candidate Portal Meanings
One screen says Reviewing Applications. Another still shows the assessment. An email mentions the next step, but the portal has not changed. This is common in TSA hiring because the systems are not always describing the same thing.
USAJOBS mainly shows the status of the job announcement. The TSA candidate system can show information about your individual application. Email, telephone and appointment notices may contain an instruction before either portal catches up.
The most useful first step is not to decode one word in isolation. Confirm which airport, announcement and stage the message belongs to.
Start With These Four Checks
When a status looks wrong or has not changed, verify four things before contacting anyone:
- Announcement: Is this the correct Job Opportunity Announcement number?
- Airport: Did the message come from the location you are checking?
- System: Is the label from USAJOBS or the TSA agency portal?
- Date: Is there a newer email, appointment notice or result message?
Applicants who apply to several airports often compare the status for one vacancy with an email sent for another. Keep a separate record for each announcement.

Job Status and Application Status Are Not the Same
USAJOBS states that it displays a job status next to an application. To see the candidate-level status supplied by the hiring agency, use Track This Application.

A vacancy can remain Reviewing Applications while you are already completing later TSA steps. That is not necessarily an error: the announcement-level hiring action is still open until the agency completes hiring.
What the Official USAJOBS Job Statuses Mean
Accepting Applications
The announcement is open and accepting applications. This says nothing about whether your own package is complete.
Check the applied date in your Applications list. An application saved in progress can exist in your profile without having been submitted to TSA.
Reviewing Applications
The announcement is closed and the hiring agency is reviewing applications. USAJOBS says this status can remain displayed until the hiring process is complete.
Do not read it as “TSA has not looked at my file.” Your candidate-level process may already be further along.
Hiring Complete
The hiring action is complete and the position was filled under that announcement.
A candidate who was not selected should not expect the announcement to reopen simply because another TSA airport still has vacancies. A new posting requires a new application.
Job Canceled
The agency withdrew the announcement and did not hire anyone under it. USAJOBS notes that an agency can cancel an announcement after posting it.
Cancellation is not a statement that you failed an assessment or background review. It describes what happened to that vacancy.
Job Closed
USAJOBS uses this label when the closing date passed and no applications were received through its online process, or when the announcement did not accept online applications.
It is less common as an individual TSA-candidate status and should not be confused with an ordinary closed announcement that now shows Reviewing Applications.
The Four Federal Application Milestones
USAJOBS describes four broad points at which agencies provide status information:
- application received;
- application reviewed;
- applicant referred or not referred; and
- applicant selected or not selected.
TSA’s high-volume TSO process can also display assessment, offer, medical, background and Ready Pool language in its own system.
Application Received Does Not Mean Qualified
Application Received means the agency received the submission. It does not confirm that:
- every required document was acceptable;
- you met the eligibility rules;
- you met the qualification route;
- you passed the assessment; or
- you will be invited to the Airport Assessment.
USAJOBS says it may take a few hours after submission for an agency status to update. Return to your Applications page, confirm the applied date and use Track This Application.
Application Reviewed, Eligible and Qualified
These labels answer different questions.
Application Reviewed means the agency examined the submitted information.
Eligible generally addresses whether you may be considered under the vacancy’s hiring path and basic rules. Qualified addresses whether you meet the minimum qualification requirements.
A person can be eligible to apply but not qualified for the position. A person can also be qualified but not move forward when TSA uses additional assessments, referral procedures or vacancy-specific selection rules.
When a notice says Ineligible or Not Qualified, read the stated reason before assuming the problem. It can involve citizenship, age, Selective Service, education or experience, a missing document, the assessment or an inconsistent answer.

Referred Is Not an Interview Appointment
Referred means the application was sent forward for hiring consideration. It does not guarantee:
- an interview;
- a tentative offer;
- selection;
- a specific place in a ranking; or
- a start date.
Not Referred means the application was not sent forward under that vacancy’s process. The reason may involve qualification, preference, the composition of the referral group or another announcement-specific rule.
USAJOBS cannot tell you why TSA made the determination. Use the agency contact listed in the announcement when the notice does not explain the result.
Selected Is Not Always the Final Offer
A federal Selected status can appear before all pre-employment conditions are complete. For a TSO candidate, a tentative selection or tentative offer can still be followed by:
- the structured Airport Assessment;
- medical evaluation;
- federal drug screening;
- fingerprints;
- background and suitability processing;
- Ready Pool or RFJO status; and
- final airport selection.
Do not resign or relocate because one screen says Selected. The practical decision point is the final written TSA offer with the duty location, pay, appointment and reporting date.
TSA-Specific Assessment and Hiring Labels
TSA does not publish one permanent public dictionary for every candidate-portal label. Wording can change by platform and hiring campaign. The following descriptions should therefore be read as process explanations, not promises about the exact text on your screen.
Assessment Pending or Scheduling Required
The system may be waiting for you to schedule, complete or receive processing for the computer-based assessment.
Open the invitation itself. A portal label does not extend the scheduling deadline.

Tentative Job Offer
The tentative offer allows conditional hiring to continue. It is not confirmation that medical, drug, background or airport-selection requirements are complete.
Accept or decline through the authorized method before the deadline. Save the confirmation.
Airport Assessment Complete or Result Pending
This can mean the structured interview was completed and the result or administrative update is still being processed.
A delay alone does not show pass or fail. Use the Airport Assessment results guide rather than relying on a color, percentage bar or unofficial interpretation.
Medical or Background in Process
A status may stay unchanged while providers, laboratories, medical reviewers, fingerprint systems or investigators process information.
Check whether TSA requested a form or follow-up before assuming the agency is simply waiting. Missing candidate action is different from agency review time.
Ready Pool or Ready for Final Job Offer
Ready Pool and Ready for Final Job Offer (RFJO) language indicate that the candidate completed the required pre-hire criteria and can be considered for a final offer based on airport hiring needs.

Why an Email Can Be Newer Than the Portal
Status systems are not always updated at the same moment. A message can arrive first because:
- a scheduling system generated an invitation;
- a result was released before the main portal synchronized;
- an airport sent a manual instruction;
- the candidate has more than one active application; or
- USAJOBS is still showing the announcement-level status.
Follow a valid, current instruction by its deadline even when the portal has not caught up. Keep the email and confirmation.
When two official instructions genuinely conflict, contact the TSA point of contact and ask which one controls.
A Status Bar Is Not a Score
Applicants sometimes interpret a progress bar, percentage, color or position on a dashboard as an assessment score or ranking. Unless TSA explicitly identifies it that way, do not assume it measures performance.
TSA does not publicly provide a universal TAB passing percentage, Airport Assessment score report or Ready Pool rank. The official result notice controls.
What to Do When the Status Has Not Changed
Use this sequence:
- Open the correct application in USAJOBS.
- Confirm the announcement number and airport.
- Select Track This Application.
- Check the TSA portal for unfinished tasks.
- Review email, spam and voicemail.
- Compare the date with any stated processing period.
- Contact the agency only when a deadline or promised period has passed, or a system prevents action.
USAJOBS advises that it can take up to two weeks after a job closes for an agency to review applications, depending on volume. TSA’s full TSO process is longer and includes stages beyond ordinary referral.
A useful inquiry is specific: “My medical-document deadline is August 4, but the upload link returns this error.” A daily message asking only for an update is less likely to solve anything.

USAJOBS displays status information supplied by the agency. It does not make TSA’s testing, medical, background or selection decision.
Save the Record Before It Disappears
USAJOBS states that applications are permanently removed from active and archived records 36 months after the announcement’s closing date.
Save the announcement, application confirmation, submitted documents and key notices. This is especially important when you apply to multiple airports or need to explain a later status conflict.
Status Mistakes That Create Unnecessary Panic
The most common misreadings are:
- Application Received = qualified;
- Eligible = selected;
- Referred = guaranteed interview;
- Selected = final written offer;
- Reviewing Applications = TSA has done nothing;
- Ready Pool = guaranteed start date;
- no portal update = rejection; or
- one airport’s status = every TSA application.
Read the whole notice and identify the system before attaching meaning to one word.

Which Status Is the Most Current?
Use Track This Application to reach the TSA agency system, then compare it with any newer official email or appointment notice.
What Does Reviewing Applications Mean?
The announcement is closed and the agency is reviewing candidates. The label can remain until hiring is complete.
Does Referred Mean You Will Be Interviewed?
No. It means the application was sent for consideration.
Does Selected Mean You Are Hired?
Not necessarily. TSA pre-employment conditions and a final written offer can still remain.
Why Is There No Track This Application Link?
USAJOBS says to contact the agency point of contact. The link may also be unavailable when the application was not submitted through USAJOBS using the Apply process.
Can USAJOBS Explain a Failed TSA Assessment?
No. TSA controls its assessment information and result notices.
Does RFJO Mean the Final Offer Is Coming Immediately?
No. Airport staffing and onboarding needs still control selection timing.
