Federal Air Marshal Logic Test: FAB Reasoning Method and Practice
The Logic-Based Reasoning component is one part of the Federal Air Marshal Assessment Battery. It measures whether a candidate can organize rules, separate facts from assumptions and select only the conclusion supported by the scenario.

TSA’s official preparation manual identifies two broad formats:
- True, False or Cannot Be Determined questions; and
- multiple-choice logic problems involving arrangements such as sequencing or grouping.

What the Logic Section Actually Tests
The section is not a test of aviation knowledge or Federal Air Marshal policy.
It evaluates whether you can:
- identify the exact rule;
- distinguish what must be true from what may be true;
- recognize contradictions;
- avoid reversing conditional statements;
- organize multiple restrictions;
- track order or group membership;
- eliminate impossible options; and
- work accurately under time pressure.
A candidate can miss a question even when the conclusion sounds reasonable if the conclusion is not established by the facts provided.
True, False or Cannot Be Determined
Use these definitions consistently.
True
Choose True only when the conclusion must follow from the facts.
False
Choose False when the conclusion directly conflicts with the facts.
Cannot Be Determined
Choose Cannot Be Determined when the facts do not establish whether the conclusion is true or false.
A possible conclusion is not automatically true. A conclusion that feels unlikely is not automatically false.
Original Example 1
Facts: Every officer assigned to Team Blue must attend the morning briefing. Jordan is assigned to Team Blue. Casey attends the morning briefing.
Conclusion 1: Jordan must attend the morning briefing.
Answer: True. The rule applies to every Team Blue member, and Jordan is a Team Blue member.
Conclusion 2: Casey is assigned to Team Blue.
Answer: Cannot Be Determined. Team Blue members attend the briefing, but the facts do not say that only Team Blue members attend.
Original Example 2
Facts: No employee assigned to Gate C works the night shift. Morgan works the night shift. Riley is assigned to Gate C.
Conclusion 1: Morgan is not assigned to Gate C.
Answer: True. Gate C employees do not work nights, and Morgan works nights.
Conclusion 2: Riley does not work the night shift.
Answer: True. Riley is assigned to Gate C, and no Gate C employee works nights.
Conclusion 3: Morgan works at Gate A.
Answer: Cannot Be Determined. The facts exclude Gate C but do not identify Morgan’s actual gate.
Conditional Logic
One of the most common errors is reversing an “if” statement.
If the rule says:
If a bag is selected for secondary review, it receives a red tag.
Then this is valid:
- selected for secondary review → red tag.
This is not automatically valid:
- red tag → selected for secondary review.
The red tag could be used for another reason unless the scenario says otherwise.
Watch for words such as:
- if;
- only if;
- unless;
- all;
- every;
- some;
- none;
- exactly;
- at least;
- at most;
- before;
- immediately before;
- after; and
- except.
Sequencing Problems
Sequencing questions ask you to place people, tasks, events or locations in order.
Translate rules into short notation when helpful:
- R before T →
R < T - J immediately after K →
K-J - M not first →
M ≠ 1 - P before both Q and S →
P < QandP < S
Enter fixed relationships first. Then test flexible positions.
Original Sequencing Example
Four briefings—J, K, L and M—occur one at a time.
Rules:
- J occurs before L.
- K occurs immediately before M.
- L is not last.
Which order is possible?
A. J, L, K, M
B. K, M, J, L
C. L, J, K, M
D. J, K, L, M
Answer: A.
- A satisfies J before L, keeps K immediately before M and does not place L last.
- B places L last.
- C places L before J.
- D separates K and M.
Grouping Problems
Grouping questions assign people or objects to teams, rooms, days, vehicles or categories.
A useful method is:
- draw one column or box for each group;
- enter fixed assignments;
- mark prohibited assignments;
- track capacity limits;
- combine linked rules; and
- test answer choices against the completed structure.
Original Grouping Example
Four applicants—A, B, C and D—are assigned to two rooms, East and West.
Rules:
- A and B cannot be in the same room.
- C must be in East.
- D must be with A.
Which assignment must be true?
A. A is in East.
B. B is in East.
C. D is in West.
D. B is with C.
Answer: D.
Because D must be with A, A and D form one group. Since A and B cannot be together, B must be in the other room. C is fixed in East, so B must also be in East.
Recommended Method
Use the same process for every scenario.
Step 1: Read the scenario once
Understand what is being arranged and what each label represents.
Step 2: Mark absolute rules
Identify fixed order, mandatory membership, exclusions and capacity limits.
Step 3: Build a light diagram
Use the smallest diagram that captures the rules. Overly detailed diagrams waste time.
Step 4: Read the exact question stem
“Could be true,” “must be true,” “cannot be true” and “complete and accurate list” require different proof.
Step 5: Test options against the rules
Do not choose the first option that looks plausible. Confirm it satisfies every rule.
Step 6: Answer every question
The official manual states that incorrect answers are not penalized.
Step 7: Review when time remains
The official manual permits review within Logic-Based Reasoning before time expires.
Must Be True Versus Could Be True
Must be true
A statement must hold in every valid arrangement.
Could be true
A statement needs only one valid arrangement.
Cannot be true
The statement conflicts with at least one rule in every possible arrangement.
Candidates often use one possible arrangement to answer a “must” question. That proves only possibility, not necessity.
Outside Knowledge Is a Trap
Accept the scenario’s facts as true for the question.
Do not use:
- actual TSA procedures;
- assumptions about job titles;
- personal work experience;
- stereotypes about names;
- real-world scheduling habits; or
- common sense that is not stated.
The correct answer follows from the test scenario, even when the setup differs from real life.
Time Management
- Diagram once and reuse the diagram for related questions.
- Mark negative rules clearly.
- Eliminate impossible options before comparing the remaining choices.
- Do not repeatedly test an option already disproved.
- Move on when one item is consuming too much time.
- Answer every item before the section ends.
- Use remaining time for review.
Accuracy is more important than creating a perfect-looking diagram.
How to Practice Efficiently
A focused study cycle can be:
- learn one rule type;
- solve untimed questions;
- explain why every wrong option fails;
- repeat with a time limit;
- record the error category; and
- retry a different question using the corrected method.
Track errors such as:
- reversed conditional;
- missed negative;
- outside assumption;
- capacity error;
- must/could confusion;
- incomplete diagram; or
- time-management failure.
A score alone does not tell you what to fix.
Common Mistakes
Candidates often:
- reverse “if” statements;
- treat “some” as “all”;
- ignore “not,” “except” or “unless”;
- use outside facts;
- choose True when a conclusion is merely possible;
- confuse must with could;
- overlook capacity limits;
- build an unnecessarily complex diagram;
- leave questions unanswered;
- memorize examples instead of methods; or
- spend too long on one arrangement.
